THE ACT EXAM BREAKDOWN

English

Section Format

The ACT English test is a 75-question exam that measures your understanding of the conventions of standard written English and of rhetorical skills.  Spelling, vocabulary, and rote recall of rules of grammar are not tested.  The test consists of five essays, or passages, each of which is accompanied by a sequence of multiple-choice test questions.

Total Section Time

45 minutes

  • Passage Evidence-Based Reading
  • Punctuation, Grammar and Usage, Sentence Structure
  • Rhetorical Skills
  • Usage/Mechanics

Math

Section Format

The ACT mathematics test is a 60-question exam designed to assess the mathematical skills students have typically acquired in courses taken up to the beginning of grade 12.  The test presents multiple-choice questions that require you to use reasoning skills to solve practical problems in mathematics.

60 minutes

  • Reading Graphs, Charts, Data
  • Basic Formulas & Computational Skills
  • Pre-Algebra/Elementary Math
  • Intermediate Algebra/Coordinate Geometry
  • Plane Geometry/Trigonometry

Reading

Section Format

The ACT Reading is a 40-question exam that measures your reading comprehension.  The test questions ask you to derive meaning from several texts.  Several aspects of reading comprehension is not limited to making comparisons, determine meaning of context-dependent words, phrases and statements, draw generalizations, analyze author’s or narrator’s voice and method.

Total Section Time

35 minutes

Focus:

  • Reading Comprehension of Short Narratives
  • Social Studies/Sciences Reading Skills
  • Arts/Literature Reading Skills

Science

Section Format

The ACT science test contains 40 questions that measures the interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in the natural sciences.  The test presents several sets of scientific information, each followed by a number of multiple-choice test questions.  You will be tested on understanding and interpretation three different formats: data representation, research summaries, and conflicting viewpoints.

Total Section Time

35 minutes

Focus:

  • Data Representation (graphs, tables, and other schematic forms
  • Research Summaries (descriptions of several related experiments)
  • Conflicting Viewpoints (expressions of several related hypotheses or views that are inconsistent with one another)

Writing (optional)

Section Format

The ACT writing exam measures your writing skills.  Specifically those writing skills emphasized in high school English classes and in entry-level college composition courses.  The test describes an issue and provides different perspectives on the issue.  You are ask to evaluate and analyze the perspective as well as develop your position and support for the perspective chosen.

Students gain familiarity and comfort with the ACT by covering basic test-taking strategies. Targeted lessons focus on students’ 20-25 most significant content weaknesses. Our Short Program is ideal for students who need to fine-tune their current ACT score, who have limited time to prep, or for students who need to focus on one particular section of the ACT.
